See Jodie Foster Try to Figure Out What to Do With Frozen Bodies in 'True Detective' Teaser

Everything you need to know to decide whether you’ll watch True Detective: Night Country lies in this sentence from the new series’ new teaser: “We’ve got five bodies frozen into a giant block of flesh, and no answers.” Season Four of the anthology series will premiere on Max on Jan. 14 (y’know, peak bodyberg time.)

The clip sets an ominous tone, opening with Detective Evangeline Navarro (played by Kali Reis) saying that sometimes she wishes she could disappear. “This is Alaska,” says Jodie Foster‘s character Detective Liz Danvers. “Nobody ever really leaves.” The two detectives apparently hate each other but decide to settle their differences by solving the caper of the flashcube. Clues include spirals drawn on paper, photos placed on spirals, and several characters spiraling. The plot revolves around the two detectives, based in Ennis, Alaska, attempting to solve the disappearance of eight men who work at Tsalal Arctic Research Station.

Issa López (Tigers Are Not Afraid, Secondary Effects) wrote and directed all six episodes of the series. She also served as the showrunner for the season.

The cast also includes Finn Bennett, Fiona Shaw, Christopher Eccleston, Isabella Star LaBlanc, and John Hawkes. In addition to starring in the series alongside Reis, Foster is one of the executive producers. It’s the series’ first installment since 2019 and the first since HBO ended its partnership with the show’s creator, Nic Pizzolatto, the following year. Pizzolatto is still one of the series’ producers.

“We are tremendously excited to return to the True Detective franchise and to be working with the multi-talented Issa López,” Francesca Orsi, Executive Vice President, HBO Programming, said previously. Orsi also praised López’s “singular vision.”
