Donald Trump ordered military strikes against Iran over the weekend. Now, his allies think he deserves the Nobel Peace Prize.
The president has long craved to be honored as a peacemaker, while complaining that the Nobel Committee honored Barack Obama as such in 2009. Trump most recently ranted about the award last week while announcing that the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Rwanda had agreed to a peace deal.
“I won’t get a Nobel Peace Prize for this, I won’t get a Nobel Peace Prize for stopping the War between India and Pakistan, I won’t get a Nobel Peace Prize for stopping the War between Serbia and Kosovo, I won’t get a Nobel Peace Prize for keeping Peace between Egypt and Ethiopia,” he wrote on Truth Social. He added that he also “won’t get a Nobel Peace Prize for doing the Abraham Accords in the Middle East,” and that, in fact, he won’t “get a Nobel Peace Prize no matter what I do, including Russia/Ukraine, and Israel/Iran, whatever those outcomes may be, but the people know, and that’s all that matters to me!”
Trump famously promised to end Russia’s war against Ukraine on his first day in office, but the conflict has persisted. Trump ordered the bombing of Iranian nuclear sites a day after lamenting that he will never receive a Nobel Peace Prize, subsequently announced a peace agreement between Israel and Iran, and then lashed out after both nations promptly broke the cease-fire.
Israel and Iran appear to be honoring the cease-fire, as of Tuesday afternoon. Cease-fires are anything but ironclad, though, and Israel has already broken its cease-fire with Hamas on multiple occasions. Nevertheless, Trump and his allies are tripping over themselves to claim he has brokered historic peace in the region.
“President Trump is going to win the Nobel Peace Prize, no doubt,” Sen. Katie Britt (R-Ala.) told Fox News on Monday, adding that he has “brought peace to a region that needed stability.” Rep. Mariannette Miller-Meeks also proclaimed on Monday that Trump “deserves the Nobel Peace Prize.” Rep. Buddy Carter (R-Ga.) wrote that Trump “deserves the peace prize now more than ever,” and then on Tuesday formally nominated him for the award.
Trump’s officials are also getting in on the groveling. “This is what separates @POTUS from dumb leaders of the past,” CIA Director John Ratcliffe wrote. “He had an objective in America’s interest, accomplished it without losing a single American life, but he doesn’t keep going and risk the 2nd or 3rd order effects of another regime change war. Nobel Peace Prize worthy.”
So is Trump’s son, Don Jr., who threw in a shot at Obama for good measure. “Affirmative action is when Barack Obama gets the Nobel Peace Prize instead of Donald Trump,” he wrote.
The MAGA commentariat have also been clamoring for Trump to receive the award. Kayleigh McEnany, one of the White House press secretaries during Trump’s first term, said on Monday that “instead of 34 felony counts, President Trump may end up with 34 Nobel Peace Prizes,” inviting “leftists” to “go nuts” over her claim on Fox News.
“President Trump should get the Nobel Peace Prize,” Turning Point USA founder Charlie Kirk wrote on Monday amid a torrent of posts effusively praising the president’s handling of the conflict between Israel and Iran.
Trump reposted Kirk’s call to his Truth Social page on Tuesday.
