The stock market is down, a measles outbreak is spreading, and tens of thousands of federal workers have been fired, hamstringing many of the government services Americans depend on daily — but don’t worry, we have some good news for you: Donald Trump won another golf tournament at his private club in Florida.
“I just won the Golf Club Championship, probably my last, at Trump International Golf Club, in Palm Beach County, Florida,” the president wrote Sunday on Truth Social. “Such a great honor! The Awards dinner is tonight, at the Club. I want to thank the wonderful Golf Staff, and all of the many fantastic golfers, that participated in the [event]. Such fun!”
Trump, who is 78, added a post with a few images of himself from the big day early Monday morning.
Trump was on the course as severe storms battered the Midwest and South over the weekend. Dozens of people died across several states, tornadoes ravaged homes, and tens of thousands of people were left without power. The president did post about the storms later on Sunday, after he gloated about his round of golf.
“We are actively monitoring the severe tornadoes and storms that have impacted many States across the South and Midwest — 36 innocent lives have been lost, and many more devastated,” he wrote. “The National Guard have been deployed to Arkansas, and my Administration is ready to assist State and Local Officials, as they help their communities to try and recover from the damage. Please join Melania and me in praying for everyone impacted by these terrible storms!”
Trump’s early actions as president have raised concerns about America’s ability to deal with natural disasters in the future. He’s suggested the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) should be dissolved, while continuing to call climate change a hoax. Last week, the administration began mass layoffs at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), the federal agency that monitors the weather.
Golfing as storms decimate large swaths of the nation probably isn’t inspiring a ton of confidence — nor should Americans have much confidence that Trump’s club championship win over the weekend was on the level. The president is notorious for cheating on the course, and routinely makes outlandish claims about his golfing game, including in 2023 when he claimed he shot at 67 at his club in Bedminster, New Jersey.
Sportswriter Rick Reilly wrote a book in 2019 on Trump’s dubious golf game, Commander in Cheat, for which he investigated the legitimacy of the 18 club championships Trump claimed to have won at the time. “Sixteen were lies,” Reilly told Rolling Stone.
Trump has already made six trips to Mar-a-Lago in less than two months since taking office. His golfing habit is costing taxpayers millions.
