President Donald Trump took to social media on Monday night to declare that Israel and Iran have agreed to a ceasefire.
“CONGRATULATIONS TO EVERYONE!” the president announced on Truth Social. “It has been fully agreed by and between Israel and Iran that there will be a Complete and Total CEASEFIRE (in approximately 6 hours from now,” Trump continued in his post, “when Israel and Iran have wound down and completed their in progress, final missions!), for 12 hours, at which point the War will be considered, ENDED!”
Iran and Israel confirmed the ceasefire after Iran fired several rounds of missiles at Israel early Tuesday morning, resulting in four deaths. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Israel agreed to the bilateral ceasefire, but will respond “forcefully” to any violations.
“Israel thanks President Trump and the United States for their support in defense and their participation in eliminating the Iranian nuclear threat,” Netanyahu’s office said in a statement. “In light of the achievement of the operation’s objectives, and in full coordination with President Trump, Israel has agreed to the president’s proposal for a bilateral ceasefire.”
It added, “In Operation Rising Lion, the State of Israel achieved great historical achievements and placed itself on a par with the world powers. This is a tremendous success for the people of Israel and its fighters who removed the two existential threats to our state, and ensured the eternity of Israel.”
Trump congratulated both countries on “having the Stamina, Courage, and Intelligence to end, what should be called, ‘THE 12 DAY WAR.’”
“This is a War that could have gone on for years, and destroyed the entire Middle East, but it didn’t, and never will!” he added. “God bless Israel, God bless Iran, God bless the Middle East, God bless the United States of America, and GOD BLESS THE WORLD!”
His announcement was met with praise from some Republicans, with Rep. Mariannette Miller-Meeks suggesting that “Trump deserves the Nobel Peace Prize.”
On Saturday, Trumpannounced that the U.S. launched preemptive strikes on multiple nuclear sites in Iran, which has been trading attacks with Israel since June 13. Following the U.S. attacks on Iran, Trump demanded that Iran “now make peace,” and threatened that “If they do not. Future attacks would be far greater and a lot easier.”
However, just months ago, Trump’s Director of National Intelligence, Tulsi Gabbard, testified to Congressthat American intelligence “continues to assess that Iran is not building a nuclear weapon.”
