Donald Trump isn’t happy with the state of Washington, D.C.
The president ordered the National Guard into the nation’s capital earlier this month —supposedly to crack down on crime, even though it’s been steadily declining. Now, he’s going after the city’s museums, including those that are part of the venerated Smithsonian Institution.
“The Museums throughout Washington, but all over the Country are, essentially, the last remaining segment of ‘WOKE,’” he wrote Tuesday on Truth Social. “The Smithsonian is OUT OF CONTROL, where everything discussed is how horrible our Country is, how bad Slavery was, and how unaccomplished the downtrodden have been — Nothing about Success, nothing about Brightness, nothing about the Future.”
The screed comes a week after the White House announced that it will conduct an extensive review of the Smithsonian’s exhibitions and materials, in order to “support a broader vision of excellence that highlights historically accurate, uplifting, and inclusive portrayals of America’s heritage.”
Trump’s administration has been trying to rewrite history since he took office in January, marginalizing if not erasing federal commemorations of notable Americans of color, LGBTQ+ Americans, and others.
Meanwhile, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has been working to restore the names of Confederate figures at military bases, and even to re-erect Confederate monuments — including the Confederate “Reconciliation Monument” in Arlington National Cemetery, which was taken down in 2022 after a bipartisan commission of military called it “problematic from top to bottom.”
Hegseth justified spending $10 million in taxpayer money to reestablish the monument by claiming to value history. “We recognize our history,” he told Fox News earlier this month. “We don’t erase it. We don’t follow the woke lemmings off the cliff that want to tear down statues.”
“We’re proud of our history, as difficult as it may have been in some chapters,” Hegseth added.
Slavery is of course very much a part of America’s history — but for some strange reason Trump and his lackeys don’t want to harp on the reality of how “bad” it was, instead opting to spend the government’s money to “recognize” the traitors who fought to preserve it.
