The publisher’s notes add, “Featuring nearly seven hundred original interviews and never-before-published details from every corner of Tupac’s life, the result offers a truly singular portrait of one of modern pop culture’s most towering figures.”
Tupac released four albums from 1991 to 1996, before being murdered in Las Vegas in a drive-by shooting. He had an outsized impact on hip hop, particularly on the West Coast, and was known for his socially conscious lyricism.
In an Instagram post announcing the book, Pearlman wrote, “Never, ever, ever have I worked harder on a project, or felt more attached to a project, or prayed for sanity during a project. For a lifelong sports scribe, this was both a dream come true and the beast of beasts. Mostly, it was a wondrous, fascinating, riveting journey. I hope I did the man justice.”
Pearlman is best known for his sports writing and commentary, including writing The Last Folk Hero, a biography of baseball and football legend Bo Jackson, and Showtime: Magic, Kareem, Riley, and the Los Angeles Lakers Dynasty of the 1980s, the basis of the HBO series Winning Time.
