TheDune-verse’s giant desert creatures, Shai-Hulud, have slithered their way into the hearts of millions in an unexpected way — through a novelty movie theater popcorn bucket.
Dune: Part Tworecently hit the big screen with a blowout opening weekend, debuting to a massive $81.5 million at the box office. In anticipation of the sequel, AMC Theaters released a limited-edition sandworm popcorn bucket available to purchase in theaters, and ever since it’s been announced, its — ahem — unique design (in order to grab popcorn, you have to reach into a gaping hole and pull your fist through rubbery worm teeth) have been about as buzzy as the film itself. The bucket has spawned everything from araunchySNLmusic video, to plenty ofTwitter memes about its resemblance to a popular sex toy.
The collectible buckets were originallysold by AMC for $24.99plus tax, but due to their staggering popularity, they’ve been selling out fast. Savvy sellers have been putting up listings on eBay and Etsy with prices reaching a whopping $800 — nearly 30 times the original price of the movie theater merch. Those are the most expensive listings, though, but they have been sold on the retailer for around $55-100. While it’s not cheap for a bucket, it’s certainly one unforgettable collectible. In an interview withThe New York Times, Chalamet andDuneandDune: Part TwodirectorDenis Villeneuvetalked about their opinions on the viral popcorn bucket. “I don’t want to make stupid jokes right now that will I regret tomorrow morning,” Villeneuve told NYT. “But I will say this. When I saw it, I went, ‘Hooooolysmokes.’ What the [expletive]!?
The director said on the other hand, “it created a lot of fun online. So maybe it’s positive? It’s some kind of…impressivedesign.”
Chalamet also considered the feelings of the collectible’s creators, musing that, “I can’t tell if someone is at home right now going, ‘My design worked perfectly and everyone’s talking about it.’ Or if someone’s brutally offended by the response.”
