Introducing Shackpets, our first official Shacknews mobile app
Shackpets will be the ultimate battle for cuteness and is available to download for free on App Store and Google Play. Here's our Shackpets reveal trailer that just aired on Shacknews Twitch!
I have spent the last few years on dating apps, trying to figure out what makes them feel good to use, and I believe it is not the opportunity to hook up with a human, but the ability to make snap judgements on photos.
Shackpets core mission is to spread positivity through pet pictures. It will be the ultimate battle for cuteness. No comments, no sliding into DMs, no selfies, just pictures of adorable animals. I believe that pictures of pets are one of the best parts of the Internet, but I don't enjoy having to scroll through other people's posts to find a pic of their cats or dogs.
Shackpets will serve as a destination for people searching for pet pictures online.
Shackpets uses our own proprietary Ventura Pet Detection algorithm that is a modified image detection API, and we will also be moderating the platform with our actual human Shackmods.

Ok well, primarily. Why? Really?
No disrespect! It seems like a well made app. Some good developers worked I this. This took a good chunk of resources on the app side and the server side to make happen.
So given that, cute pets are cute doesn’t seem like a reason. But maybe it is. I’m no business strategist or brand manager, so maybe this above my pay grade. But, like, why?-
Why not? If you can reach critical mass there’s plenty of opportunity for advertising revenue and in-app purchases for stickers, and filters, etc shit to dress up your pets or whatever.
It’s a little bit off-brand for shacknews, but kinda not. Lola’s all over the site, there’ve been articles about the staff pets and whatnot.
So in these times of hate, rage, and divisiveness - why not fight with cute pet pics at least? -

But to provide further color as to why I did this project?
Shacknews is likely my last stop in the video game industry, so I will be dumping a lot of my random ideas onto the table over the next few years. Shackpets is something that was truly born out of my love for animal pictures, and my dog Lola.

Nope. The Vote Screen is populated by challenges made by users in the Challenge Screen.

I'm a little confused about the Challenge page in the app (iOS) To challenge another pet with the photo of my pet, do I just click the swords icon? What about the picture of my pet in the top-right - do I have to click that first and then hit the Confirm button to make the challenge happen? It's a bit confusing with no on-boarding process and no in-app Help.

Pet images are tied to the Pet name in the app. A Pet cannot challenge itself. A Shacker cannot challenge their own pets.

I don't have a pet either. I asked about a pet rock. No response yet.
In my defense, I'm terrible about taking care of pets. I love animals but not enough to actively want to take care of one. Maybe an iguana for a pet is more my speed? I dunno.
