Subnautica 2 devs address 'games-as-a-service' & multiplayer concerns

Unknown Worlds stressed that the next Subnautica can be completed solo and won't be bogged down with microtransactions.

Thanks to a report from Unknown Worlds parent company Krafton, we now know that a new Subnautica game is in development, but some details in that original announcement caused concern among fans. There was wording that suggested Subnautica 2 (the working title at the moment) could be a games-as-a-service offering, as well as requiring multiplayer to complete. Unknown Worlds has stepped in to dispel those rumors. The developer claims you’ll still be able to complete the next Subnautica solo and “games-as-a-service” only means they’ll be updating it frequently.

Unknown Worlds addressed the controversy with Subnautica 2 in a recent press release. According to the devs, recent concerns about the “games-as-a-service” and multiplayer aspects of Subnautica 2 are unfounded. Both are addressed directly in the release as a miscommunication in the initial announcement:

Concern for Subnautica 2 started in Krafton's recent earnings release, which shared first details about the development.

In addition, Unknown Worlds clarifies that early access for the new Subnautica game won’t be out in 2024, but we will get new information about it (probably including said release date) later this year. This was also shared in Krafton’s recent earnings release.

“Early Access is not intended for release in 2024, but we plan to share a lot more information later this year!,” Unknown Worlds wrote.

Subnautica has been a very fun franchise to explore, giving players vast oceanic depths full of creatures to interact and contend with. We absolutely loved the original, and we enjoyed the Below Zero standalone follow-up as well. As we wait to hear more about Subnautica 2, stay tuned at Shacknews for more updates and info.

I would have full on skipped it. They would be crazy to make it a live service.

Thank the gaming Gods!!!! So I guess they saw the sales numbers and active players of Suicide Squad and back tracked LOL :) . Yeah, I thought it would have been insane if they had actually wanted to do a always online, forced login, GAAS title.

Very nice either way, today is going to be a good day!

There is no back tracking by Unknown Worlds here. Only clarification about things that people took out of context and ran with. Dumb gamers getting up in arms over rumors are the only ones having to backtrack.

Yeah that is what I thought, but still they should have known what GAAS would have triggered in all of use, maybe they should fire their PR LOL :) . I kid about Suicide Squad even though you have to admit it is a little ironic how that one turned out.

Regardless it is awesome they went straight up crushed any fears any of us had, I love to see that!

Glad they got in front of this. I very much look forward to this one! I hope that the coop approach doesn’t cause too many concessions on immersion and a quality single player experience. The loneliness is somewhat in the nature of a survival horror immersive sim experience, and I can see a multiplayer experience potentially competing against that. Would it have felt as dreadful (in a positive “survival horror” sense) to keep pushing deeper in the first game if you had even one more person with you?

Not that I don’t look forward to what will be an incredible multiplayer experience anyway. But I long for the feelings the first game brought!

I probably have faith in this one though. People were clamoring for co-op for the first game, so adding that in as long as it doesn't affect the single player experience much seems very sensible.

redshak and I would def. play this single player. It ruins the atmosphere otherwise

Yeah, I'd argue Unknown Worlds isn't chasing trends like BioWare was. They're listening to their audience and trying to give all of the fans what they want. That's why they got ahead of this in the first place.

If Anthem was SP, offline, had an optional P2P co-op people, DLC content to expand the worled we would still be playing it :( .
