The Xbox Games Showcase ended with a look at new hardware coming to Microsoft’s lineup. This is where we got our first look at the all-digital Xbox Series X, a white version of the rectangular console with no disc drive.

The white all-digital Xbox Series X will ship this holiday season. Microsoft has also revealed a Galaxy Black special edition of the Series X console as well.

Fans can get their hands on the new Xbox Series X model later this year. If you’re looking for more news out of the Xbox Games Showcase, Shacknews has what you’re looking for.

Cue John Linneman lamenting the imminent death of disc-based games.

To be clear... I'm kiiiinda with him just from the perspective of having options and preservation, but I haven't bought a disc based game in over a decade now. Convenience and shelf space wins out .

Also it’s not like you’re getting anything special unless you spring for the collector’s edition. It’s just a cheap plastic box, a paper cover that if you’re lucky has alternative art work on the other side, and a disk that will eventually stop working.

I go back and forth with agreeing with him. He’s definitely basically a preservation activist on this… but if people just aren’t buying discs in quantities that justify the associated costs (again because digital is just more convenient) no platform holder is going to spend over the odds to keep it alive.

I also think he’s one of those people that just likes having A Physical Thing for a game, disadvantages be damned.

Plus, disc rot is a thing (yes, more recent disc formats have improved a lot here, but they’re still physical media prone to deterioration eventually). I know digital games typically have licensing/DRM bullshit but at least you can move them between storage mediums or download again (as long as the service is still around).

He's a collector yes, I don't want to advocate for either but I wish physical keeps being a thing.

On PC is unnecessary because it's an open platform you can backup your games freely. On the consoles though...

I also think there's some value in going to a shop and see a bunch of games there you can buy. Xbox here in Europe has barely any shelf space at all, but Nintendo and PS sections are massive, that also reflects on how each system is performing.

Oh and there's also the big plus of being able to sell or buy used games.

Kids here do it all the time, for us it's not an issue but when money is tight it is certainly a plus.

A few bux cheaper. TBH I haven’t used the disc drive in mine even once.

It's ironic because having a disc drive can be a huge cost saver for someone who is budget conscious.

True, but disc pressing, shipping, sale or return costs etc . for publishers mean discs are ultimately doomed as soon as the manufacturers can get away with it in the near future. Next Xbox will have an addon drive at best, no doubt about it.

I probably say this too much but I just do not miss disc swapping in the slightest.

It’s probably going to continue being an option because they’re rightfully proud of their backwards compatibility program. The fact that you can just put in your old Xbox original and 360 disks and they just work is still impressive and a nice present for collectors.

In some form, yes. I’d put money on it being an external addon only for next gen though.

Agreed. I've become far too lazy to get up and walk across the room to swap discs when I change games. Also, I've noticed a lot of disc games still end up downloading multiple-gigabyte updates anyway. I guess an add-on drive will be the way for companies to go forward.

You think you “owned” the disc? They had the same “granting you a license to this software” bullshit and DRM.

The only difference is you can loan it to a friend, and people make way more of a deal of that versus how much I think it actually happens - who wants to loan a game out just to never see it again for years if ever?

Gross, don't spread around that misattributed nonsense "quote". All the MAGA folks on my local next door constantly post that shit along with claims the UN is going to force us to eat bugs. If you read the paper that that statement was misattributed to the author isn't even promoting that as an ideal state for the world, just illustrating one possible outcome for some goods.
