Apple rolled out its new Passwords app at its Worldwide Developer Conference today. The new app will allow users to store credentials for their devices and services in a single app.

The Worldwide Developers Conference is underway with Apple’s keynote. During this showcase the company announced the new Passwords app. Passwords is an app that will be available on iOS, MacOS, and iPadOS. This app will allow users to store Wi-Fi passwords, app passwords, website passwords, verification codes, shared passwords, sign-in with Apple, and passkeys. While this may seem unappealing to some, the company did announce the ability to lock apps with its iOS 18 update expected later this year.

While Passwords is a notable feature coming to Apple devices, the company really blew the doors off when it announced the Calculator app was coming to iPadOS. For more news on everything related to WWDC, follow the Shacknews topic for Apple.

The calculator app is pretty cool with handwriting recognition/shortcuts and conversions. We waited a long time for a native iPad app. Pretty cool!

The math notes feature has nothing to do with the calculator app.

In fact math notes has nothing to do with handwriting or the iPad (although it does work with it).

Math notes work inside Apple Notes and you can type them on a keyboard and even on a Mac, it’s pretty awesome.

maybe ill switch from bitwarden so my passwords are locked behind touch id instead of a master password

Bitwarden has biometric unlocking in settings.

I use 1Password and it supports FaceID but you still have to enter your master password every 2 weeks. I think that’s actually a good feature though because it prevents you from forgetting it.

            Yeah, Authy does something similar.

you can save the 1Password master password in the iOS keychain and thus enter it with Face ID, defeating that feature. ain't nobody got time to type a master password on a phone keyboard :P

Haha yeah, it is annoying but every 2 weeks isn’t bad.

I like how he called out "and it's on Windows too!" trying to tap into that pc market share, get people hooked on a apple product, then upsell hardware later... Exactly what they should have done with android and iMessage

        June 11, 2024 6:10 AM

I would love for them to open iMessage to android, but it would need a subscription or a disclaimer that iMessage on android can only save to the local device. I have 10.3 GB of messages stored in iCloud. Lots of media gets sent back and forth within the family. Apple opening up for that media to be stored anywhere other than iCloud isn’t going to happen.

Upselling hardware from a password manager is not what’s happening here, this isn’t an avenue to “hook new customers”.

This is for people already in the Apple ecosystem that still need a windows computer from time to time. 99% of anyone that needs free password management is going to use whatever is built into chrome or edge without even realizing it.

Yeah my two thoughts in order were

          a) I could use this instead of 1Password
          b) But I still to have passwords on Windows

          And then

          c) Apple has a lot of work to do to make something as well done as 1Password so we'll see...

iOS keychain is pretty great on Apple devices as it is, it’s not like they’re starting from scratch. I don’t use 1password but I can’t think of anything where the iOS keychain is lacking

the best part about 1pw is when there is a hack or data breech the app will show me accounts that are compromised and what I need to fix. does apple do that?

Yes Apple does that in keychain already.

I always would run in to some dumb bug where I’d type “passwords” in settings to search for it and like 25% of the time it won’t show in the results, it’s so maddening

I’m using a chrome extension right not but it’s kinda hit or miss, I’m 100% jumping on this if / when it’s available for windows

requires the icloud app to be installed and that app has a lot of issues. look at the reviews on the windows store
